Update Prop 47 Reform And PORAC Advocacy
On behalf of PORAC President Brian Marvel:
Dear Members,
I'm writing to provide you with an important update on recent developments regarding Proposition 47 reform efforts and to reaffirm PORAC's commitment to advocating for the interests of our 80,000+ public safety members across California.
As you may have heard, Senate Bill (SB) 1381, which was one of the proposals aimed at reforming Prop 47, has been pulled by the leadership. While this particular bill is no longer moving forward, I want to assure you that PORAC remains actively engaged in discussions around Prop 47 reform and other critical issues affecting our membership.
PORAC has been advocating for Prop 47 reform since the measure first passed in 2014, and we continue to push for meaningful changes that will enhance public safety and support the work of law enforcement professionals across the state. Our approach to advocacy is comprehensive and strategic, always keeping in mind the "big picture" that affects our diverse membership.
In addition to Prop 47 reform, PORAC is currently focused on several other crucial issues, including:
- Ensuring confidentiality for labor representatives when speaking to union members
- Developing additional guidelines and training for K-9 units
- Addressing important workers' compensation issues
- And many other policies critical to our members' success both on and off the job
Our strength lies in our ability to have a seat at the negotiating table, allowing us to effectively represent your interests across a wide range of issues. PORAC's legislative positions are always the result of in-depth, thoughtful discussions with our Board of Directors and are informed by the advice of our top-notch political advocates.
A measured response has always been PORAC’s trademark, we think before we act, a sign of good leadership. This is why elected leaders seek out PORAC’s guidance on critical public safety issues. We stand for good policy, not making headlines.
We understand that the legislative process can be complex and sometimes frustrating, but please know that your PORAC leadership is working tirelessly to advance the interests of our members. Our commitment to seeing positive change in areas like Prop 47 reform remains unwavering, even as specific bills or proposals may change over time.
If you have any questions about PORAC's advocacy efforts, our process for taking positions on legislation, or any other concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out to one of your board members or me directly.
Thank you for your continued support and trust in PORAC's leadership.
